Understanding Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is common especially among older adults and people who work in noise.

Hearing Aids - Over-the-counter and prescription devices

Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids may be appropriate for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Prescription hearing aids are recommended for more severe hearing losses and for children.

Key considerations:

  • Degree of hearing loss
  • Comfort and fit
  • Follow-up and support
  • Realistic expectations during adaptation

Noise Exposure & Prevention

Excessive noise exposure can cause permanent hearing loss.

General guidelines:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure above 85 dBA
  • Use hearing protection in occupational settings
  • Follow safe listening practices with personal audio devices
